I don’t drive fast, I drive YOUNG

A summary of Day One of Keith Geiger’s Journey to Pittsburgh:

8:45am— Depart from Moraga. Keith skips breakfast. Again.

8:46– Keith cracks opens his first Coke of the day

9:05— After a three-mile, 20-minute crawl through downtown Lafayette, Keith finally hits the freeway. At this rate he’ll make to Pittsburgh by July. Next year.

11:30— Keith crosses the border into Nevada. He celebrates by switching to Cherry Coke.

12:30— Gas and pit stop in Fernley, NV. Text picture of “Sports Casino” to Mom and Dad. Ask if they have any internships.

3:00— Pass sign for Battle Mountain, NV. What a great name for a town. Too bad no one lives here.

3:30— Lunch. Subway. Heaven.

4:30— Keith reaches Elko, NV, where he originally planned to stop. But there’s WAY too much daylight left. On to Wendover, UT.

6:30— Keith crosses the border into Utah. He celebrates by switching to Vanilla Coke.

6:31— Keith reaches Wendover, UT. He’s amazed how much the world can changed just by crossing the Nevada/Utah border. He wonders what he’ll see tomorrow when he crosses the Utah border into Wyoming. Or the Wyoming border into Nebraska. Or the Nebraska border into…

6:32— Still WAY too much daylight left. On to Salt Lake City.

8:00– Keith sees the Salt Lake City airport on the horizon, surrounded by hotel signs. Should be no problem snagging a room. Good, because after ten hours of driving, he’s EXHAUSTED.

9:00– Eight hotels, eight no vacancies. What is this, Vegas at New Year’s? Time to call Dad.

9:30– Dad’s called six hotels, all full. The next town is in Wyoming. Oh oh.

9:40– Finally, Keith finds a room on the other side of town, across from the right side of the tracks. It costs $55 a night. Or $10 bucks an hour, depending how long you plan to stay. There’s no wifi, but it doe’s have air conditioning and a working toilet. And a deadbolt lock.

10:00 Keith passes out. He gets to do this all over again tomorrow.

Stay tuned for further updates.
